For Labor Day Weekend September 1-4, we found a congenial flock of free and cheap things to do in Seattle and around Puget Sound.
The big festival this weekend is the Bumbershoot multi-disciplinary arts festival at Seattle Center. Single day tickets are $99-$149, with 3-day and VIP options above that. Bumbershoot tickets go on sale months in advance, and the price goes up the closer we get to the festival. If this is too rich for your pocketbook, consider volunteering—but, you must submit an application by August; so put it on your list for next year. Note that I’ve lived in Seattle all my life and have yet to attend this event. There are plenty of other things to do for a lot less money.
Free Labor Day Weekend Festivals include the Oak Harbor music festival on Whidbey Island and the Family-friendly blackberry festival in Bremerton.
It’s the final weekend for the $12 Evergreen State Fair in Monroe. Opening this weekend is the $12.50 Washington State Fair in Puyallup, which runs through September 24. The same sort of fun on a smaller scale can be had at the $15 family fun park all summer in Carnation.
But wait, there’s more! Any of these getaways would be a great way to spend the last weekend of summer: Tumbleweeds Folk Music Festival in Richland, WA, $17-$37 rodeos in Ellensburg or the $10 Kittitas County Fair in Ellensburg (which is included if you buy a ticket to the rodeo).
Aviation enthusiasts will enjoy the $15 Vintage Aircraft Show in Everett.
Dance aficionados will want to catch the $12 documentary double-feature on tap dance history in Seattle.
Love snow sports? Then get in on the Annual Ski Bonkers ski & snowboard sale in Bellevue; save big on ski and snowboard equipment and gear.
There’s plenty of other fun: free and cheap live music, free movies, chess and gaming events, free meals for kids and teens, live glass blowing, planetarium and aquarium shows, nature and garden events, comedy shows, meditation and prayer events, free Sunday boat rides, Sunday flea market in Fremont, bonsai tours, distillery tours.
