  • Ensure that your Smoke Detectors, Fire Alarm and Security System are all working correctly. Test them, if you haven't recently.
  • Be a Safe Swimmer. Water sports and fireworks are two of the biggest pastimes for Fourth of July celebrations, and these are both linked to numerous deaths and injuries each year. Never swim alone, and make sure that the kid's are supervised at all times. Many people drown when other people are 'nearby'. Always designate a chaperone to keep an eye on the kids. Have a 'throwable' flotation device available.
  • If fireworks are legal in your community and are a part of your celebration, be sure to store an use them safely. Do not allow young children to handle or use fireworks. Always have water ready to douse a fire. Obey local laws. Never re light a "dud" firework. Soak 'spent' fireworks with water-prior to placing them in an outdoor garbage can.
  • Use alcohol responsibly. Alcohol and fireworks can be a hazardous and dangerous combination.
  • Grill safely. Ensure that the BBQ Grill is away from your home, deck, rails, eaves or branches.
  • Cover food and beverages outdoors to discourage the bees and wasps from crashing your party.
  • Apply sunscreen both before and during an outdoor party.
  • If you will be hiking or camping, wear long sleeved, light colored clothing - to prevent ticks. Also, tuck your pants into your socks, shoes or boots!
  • Stay hydrated, especially if it is hot - or, if you are consuming alcohol.
  • Don't leave the picnic food out all day. This will invite food borne illness. Keep coolers handy with plenty of ice available to keep food cold outside.
  • Keep Pets inside. Close the windows and curtains. Turn up the music or TV. July 5th is the busiest day at most Public Shelters.
  • Ensure that your Smoke Detectors, Fire Alarm and Security System are all working correctly. Test them, if you haven't recently.
